Anyone who has visited Zippy’s knows that they are tops with mixed plates - from the chili frank with mac salad to the stew plate…oh, so ono!
My favorite is the SurfPac, and not the mini – I need the whole plate.
No, I can’t really eat it all in one sitting, but, having spent a lot of time with my Chinese grandmother, I like to know I have another meal stashed away for tomorrow. So, what I usually do is eat certain things first.
Like the fried mahi. No way is that going to last to the next meal without getting yucky. That, and the spam - which has just the right sodium complement to the mostly bland fish. Then, I save the chicken, teri beef, one scoop each of rice and mac salad, for another day. But, that’s just me.
Our own version of a mixed plate this week consists of some mind expanding moments, including Calendar Editor, Kaui Awong’s humorous look at pot use in the dorms with “Smoking in the Dorm room” and a special contribution from educators Mary and Cliff DeVries.
The DeVries are long-time directors of the local Transcendental Meditation movement and will be offering an ongoing look at its benefits thru regular installments, called “Brain Waves”.
Even I jumped into the mix - losing my mind in the process of scoping out the Pirates production set, with my close up look at Johnny Depp fans in “I’m not a fan. Really.” What really happened is I got a little pixie dust on me, and…well, the rest is movie history.
Kevin Costner, who fulfilled movie dreams on a baseball diamond, said it best, “I'm a big fan of dreams. Unfortunately, dreams are our first casualty in life - people seem to give them up, quicker than anything, for a 'reality’.”
This mixed-plate issue is dedicated to the dreamers of the world – may we never grow too old to dream big dreams!

...after shooting a bunch of photos, I got caught up in the moment myself and promptly dropped my camera so that I could get a handshake from old Jack. He was standing right in front of me, with only a thin waist rail separating us. How could I not? Funny thing is, in all the excitement – and, staring at Johnny Depp in front of me - I lost it.

Waking up in the early hours of the morning to get to work or school is hard enough. Add the unknown traffic conditions and the possibility of spending hours in traffic because you turned right instead of left, and you’re back in a nightmare from the night before. What if you could wake up from this nightmare?

With visions of Rambo, Rocky, Die Hard and the Terminator series in mind, I walked into the theater thinking one of two things would happen. A: I would walk out thinking this was hands down the best action film ever made, or B: this would be a film which tried desperately to succeed on the star power of its cast.

If, by some slim chance, a college kid would ever want to become a master of concealing activities involving marijuana, these are steps he or she might take.
