Back to School Print Issue!

The first few days of school are always full of excitement – purchasing books (on time), finding just the right seat (where you can text undetected) in class, and getting back into an academic schedule. Then there are those extracurricular activities - sports, the arts, and, yes, writing for one of the several sister publications here at UH Manoa.

An online little sis’ to Ka Leo, the school newspaper, Ka Lamakua represents an alternative view, with a focus on the creative elements of arts and culture - on campus and within the greater community.

For this issue, Ka Lamakua brings to readers a reprint of the Ka Leo’s back to school issue. Packed full of what every college student needs to know, this special edition of Ka Leo also includes the first ever printed edition of Ka Lamakua, “Express Yourself”.

Self-expression in a world which is quickly homogenizing and commercialized can be a daunting task. For exiled writer, Salman Rushdie, whose published work has threatened his own personal safety, the power of expression can also come with consequences.
According to Rushdie, “What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.”

Express yourself and set your mind free!

Aloha,
Andrea

Special thanks to Taressa Ishimi and Priscilla for scramblin like mad to put our print layout together!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Hercules (Disney version and Kevin Sorbo alike), Brad Pitt as Achilles, and of course hummus… I don’t know about you, but for me this is sadly the extent of my exposure to Greek culture. So I am definitely excited about the 30th Annual Greek Festival happening on August 28 and 29 at McCoy Pavillion in Ala Moana Park.
