In the last half of the 20th century, scientific research in Antarctica has become a major international enterprise. The strange breed of people drawn to the ultimate Down Under, scientists, technicians, and lifelong travelers – “professional dreamers” all – are the subject of iconoclastic filmmaker Werner Herzog’s critically acclaimed documentary. “…a poignant study of the human psyche amid haunting landscapes…” – RottenTomatoes.com
One of those featured in Herzog’s film is University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa physicist Peter Gorham, who went to Antarctica to “capture” the elusive neutrino, a subatomic particle with a mass less than a millionth of an electron. Dr. Gorham will introduce the film, share his experiences, and reflect on the Antarctic’s role as a fulcrum in the balance of world ecology.
