After watching all of the podcasts, downloading the trailer, going through all of the bands on the website and grilling a good friend who saw the film in chicago (for roughly two hours), I can honestly say that I am thoroughly obsessed with Four Eyed Monsters. It seems like the sort of film that is complete carnage. The film is the story of Arin Crumley and Susan Buice. It is meant to be some sort of performance art piece -- they begin to date but decide not to speak through the entire courtship. They have sex before they even speak to eachother. For indie film followers, this is probably old news.
Using myspace and blogs, Arin and Susan created a following that created a level one cult that created an actual audience. Along the way they received press from everyone from the Boston Globe to the New York Times. They even received a nod from the Wallstreet Journal.
It’s not entirely real. According to Podcast Number 1 in the Four Eyed Monsters series, they decide to include actors around halfway through. According to my friend in Chicago, there’s some real footage at the end. The truth is, even if it’s acting, it’s incredibly raw. The soundtrack, itself, is worth being obsessed with.
Here’s the catch. If you can get 150 people to request a showing in any certain town, then they show up and have a sweet little after party. I can’t imagine that an after party would actually happen this far from New York, but I’d love to see it at Varsity. I really don’t want to have to ask one of my criminal friends to pirate it.
