Dieselboy Sonically Attacks Nextdoor

By Will Connor

Saturday, October 14th was an amazing night of musical entertainment all over Honolulu! The Korean music concert kicked things off followed by the (sad) last goth night, Noctuary, at Pink Cadillac, then it was off to 00-Spot’s event, Deiselboy at Nextdoor.

When I got to the club the first DJ had started. He was playing hard step jungle backing tracks over pop reggae. I am not one to listen to too much reggae, but I have to admit that the way he blended the jerky back beats with the dub material had me questioning my dislike for reggae. He was a little too egotistical for me though, always grabbing the mic and talking to the audience over what was already plenty of entertainment, and he did so many times throughout the night, well after his turn on stage was over. This was the only bad part of the night, though.

Next up was DJ Trek from the east coast. He used a wonderful mix of dark step and hard step jungle mixed with various electronica and samples to make for a kick ass warm up for Dieselboy. I knew what to expect from Dieselboy, and I was wondering if Trek was going to give him a run for his money, throwing down the way he did! It was a excellent set and it got the crowd (more or less) ready for Dieselboy, especially if they had never heard him before.

Then the moment came! Dieselboy took the table and practically threw them at the audience. Busting out with harsh dark step and hard step backing tracks, he mixed in everything from samples of the Twilight Zone to Pantera guitar solos, bringing down the house with sheer unadulterated abandon. Some people got scared and ran away, but most moved closer to the front (to my pleasant surprise.) There were even go-go dancers on the tables behind the crowd and a new light show for the event that heightened the music’s effect on the dancing mass.

Gettin' a go-go

Dieselboy did not disappoint me nor probably anyone. His sense of balance and energy throughout the set was astounding and exhibited his professionalism and justified his international following.
